Kapwa Walk: Le Village
🌈 🌈 KAPWA WALK IS BACK! 🌈 🌈
To celebrate Montreal’s Pride season, Centre Kapwa is partnering with @wildpridemonteal for a community walk through Le Village.
Kapwa Walk is a monthly community walk that began during the cold Montreal winter months, with the lack of physical activity and connection among the community. Its stated goal is to foster the mental and physical wellbeing of the community by bringing people to explore different Montreal neighbourhoods, connect to local communities, and move together. Since November 2022, we have roamed around in neighbourhoods like Mile End, Pointe-Saint-Charles, Verdun, Shaughnessy Village, Chinatown, Uptown, Old Port, and NDG.
Wild Pride MTL is a queer, grassroots, anti-corporate alternative to mainstream Pride. Born out of frustration with pinkwashing and tokenism, it creates space for radical joy, resistance, and community care.
This special Kapwa Walk invites participants to explore the Village through the experiences of the communities who have shaped it, with a focus on stories that are often overlooked in mainstream narratives. Rather than centering the Village as an entertainment district, we will engage with social, political, and community histories, exploring questions of belonging, exclusion, displacement, activism, and resistance.
The walk will be led by @joyridermtl, Marbella Carlos (she/her), a burlesque artist, creative arts therapist, Ph.D. student, and Centre Kapwa’s Research and Advocacy Fellow. Her creative and scholarly work explores the intersections of identity, art, healing, and joy.

Kagat Zine Fair 2026
Kagat Zine/DIY Fair is a gathering of Filipinx/a/o zinesters, makers and artists to share their works and discover others who share the same passion for small scale self-publishing and DIY culture. The fair is organized by Centre Kapwa's Ka Collective to celebrate the three year anniversary of Ka-Artehan, their monthly Filipinx/a/o artist drop in.
Our artists will be doing a skill sharing as part of their tabling and this event will also be our finnissage for "The Island is not the Territory" exhibit. Come through to say hi to our artists and discover new crafts!

The Island Is Not The Territory
Join us for "The Island Is Not the Territory", a group exhibition for Filipino Heritage Month featuring works by Filipinx/a/o artists (as well as collaborations): Issa Emmanuelle Albite, Zion Axelle, Nikki Celis, MJ Desharnais, AJ, Allan Matudio & Craig Commanda, Deann Louise C. Nardo, Rubina Ofiaza, AC Tagubar, Andi Vicente & Pasha April Partridge, and Leah Evangelista Woolner.
A map is only a reduction of reality. Though islands may appear separate, currents, histories, and solidarities continue to connect them. Bringing together different “islands” of experience and practice, the exhibition pushes against the idea of isolation and reflects on the possibilities of relation, kinship, and collective becoming across difference.

Ginhawa: Breathing a Shared Practice
Ginhawa: Breathing a Shared Practice – Filipino Printmakers Artist Panel
This artist talk brings together Carlo Calope (@calope_papi) , Melanie Garcia (@_melanie_garcia) , and Mia Cataquiz, artists of Filipino descent who met in Print Media at Concordia University. Drawing on ginhawa and kapwa, they explore how diasporic experience shapes approaches to material, authorship, and collective care.
They discuss their engagement with anitos—precolonial ancestral and nature spirits—and how these inform a view of print as relational, embodied, and in circulation. Through personal narratives and shared methods, their work addresses memory, hybridity, and belonging.
Moderated by Deann Louise Nardo (@friedchickenvixen), Director of Arts and Culture at Centre Kapwa (@centrekapwa) , a non-profit organization decolonizing Filipinx-Canadian diaspora mental health and wellness through Art, Movement, and Conversations.

Kalayaan School
Jaconda : Portraits of Filipinx Belonging. Led by MJ Desharnais
This workshop invites participants to reflect on how Filipino/a/x identity can be carried, revealed, or echoed through the everyday objects we keep close. Whether inherited, purchased, improvised, or carried through migration, these small items often hold stories of care, culture, survival, and connection that are not always spoken aloud.
This workshop series is part of Kalayaan School, a series designed to support youth in connecting their personal stories to broader social and political issues, fostering awareness and community engagement. Through storytelling, creative expression, and dialogue, participants will explore how their experiences relate to histories of migration, identity, and belonging.
Facilitated by Filipino/a/x leaders, artists, and scholars with deep expertise and lived experience, each session will encourage mentorship, reflection, and cultural pride.
Over five workshops, participants will engage with themes such as identity, intergenerational memory, social justice, and community organizing. Activities may include art-making, storytelling, and group projects that inspire creativity and connection.
The program aims to strengthen youth voice, cultural understanding, and collective empowerment toward more equitable and inclusive futures.

Parol-Making Workshop
Join us in celebrating the holidays and be part of Centre Kapwa's fourth annual Parol Making workshop! ⭐️ Due to popular demand, we will have two separate workshop days this year!
A parol is a craft resembling a star-shaped lantern. For Filipina/o/xs, making parols and hanging them outside their windows symbolize the victory of light over darkness as well as their shared expression of faith, hope, and goodwill during the holiday season. 🎄
We kindly ask for a donation of $20. This cost helps pay for materials and snacks, with $5 of each ticket donated to typhoon relief in the Philippines. First-come first-serve basis for the first 20 people to register for each dates of the parol making. Note that each ticket pays for one parol and families and friends are welcome to make one parol together!
The workshop is facilitated by Deann and Zion, members of Ka Collective, artists of Centre Kapwa.
Ka-Artehan Undas Circle
November's Ka-Artehan will be an intimate Undas circle. Usually held on November 1st, Undas is a time in the Philippines where we honour and celebrate our ancestors. There will also be a community altar so bring a photo, something meaningful from your loved one or an offering. You can share a story about them with us and we will collectively make space and welcome your ancestors.

Anting-Anting Workshop
Led by community member and facilitator Ash (@sana_all.ceramics), we’ll briefly discuss the origins of anting-antings, then take a moment to reflect on what we want to invite into our protective charms. Ash will demonstrate how to craft them using clay, providing all necessary tools and glazes.
Participants are encouraged to personalize their anting-antings with symbols, sigils, or words that resonate with their intentions—whether it’s protection, self-kindness, gratitude for ancestors, or solidarity with the kapwa community worldwide. Feel free to create as many as you like!
While the workshop centers on Filipino/a/x culture in the diaspora, all non-Filipino/a/x kapwa are warmly welcome.

Hosted by Centre Kapwa, we’re coming together to honor strength, community, and the power of storytelling. This EXCLUSIVE screening will be followed by a powerful community talkback with Fly Lady Di and France Stohner, diving deep into mental health, youth, and the arts. Written by the talented Catherine Hernandez @legshernandez , with music from many wonderful artists, including Kimmortal @kimmortaltheartist and Alex Punzalan @l3xjunior , this is an event you won’t want to miss!
