Kalayaan School

A series of five educational workshops and activities. 18+

The workshop series will be designed to support youth in connecting their personal narratives to broader social and political issues, fostering both self-awareness and collective consciousness. Through storytelling, creative expression, and dialogue, participants will be encouraged to see how their lived experiences relate to histories of migration, identity, community, and resistance.

All of the workshops will be facilitated by Filipino/a/x leaders, artists, and scholars with deep expertise and lived experience in the subject areas. These facilitators will also serve as mentors, offering guidance, affirmation, and inspiration as youth explore questions of belonging, heritage, and social responsibility.

Over the course of five sessions, participants will engage with themes such as cultural identity, intergenerational memory, social justice, and community organizing. Workshops may include activities such as art-making, storytelling, critical reflection, and collaborative projects that encourage youth to envision the kinds of futures they wish to build for themselves and their communities.

The ultimate goal of the series is to help youth strengthen their voices, deepen their sense of cultural pride, and recognize their capacity to contribute to broader movements for equity and change.

We kindly ask for a donation of $20. This cost helps pay for materials and snacks, with $5 of each ticket donated to typhoon relief in the Philippines. First-come first-serve basis for the first 20 people to register for each dates of the parol making. Note that each ticket pays for one parol and families and friends are welcome to make one parol together!

The workshop is facilitated by Deann and Zion, members of Ka Collective, artists of Centre Kapwa.

Kapwa Movie Nights: Inay (Mama)

Centre Kapwa is excited to bring back Kapwa Movie Nights again this year for Asian and Filipino Heritage Month.

We are honoured to present, for the first time ever in Montreal, the award-winning documentary INAY (MAMA) by Thea Loo.

With the desire to help answer unresolved questions and heal lingering wounds, INAY (MAMA) investigates the flawed immigration pathways between the Philippines and Canada that kept so many Filipino children from their mothers.

The film will be followed by a post-screening discussion with director Thea Loo and Jeremiah Reyes, moderated by @martinthomasdufresne.

Launched in 2024, Kapwa Movie Nights aim to present films made by Asian and Filipino filmmakers. This is a way to celebrate the creativity within our community, for our stories deserve to be told and put forward, and to expand our perception of movies beyond the mainstream western media by promoting Asian cinema.
